Hand-addressed and free-franked address panel, 5 x 3, addressed in Adams’ hand to “Richard Rush, Esq., Controuler of the Treasury, Washington,” franked in the upper right corner “Free,” and signed between the first and second address lines, “J. Adams.” Adams also adds, “Quincy, Ms, Septr. 8.” Panel has been professionally inlaid to a 7.5 x 5.5 sheet, and accompanied by an engraved portrait of Adams. Richard Rush (1780-1859), was the son of Adams’ longtime friend and correspondent Benjamin Rush, who was unsuccessful as John Quincy Adams running mate in the 1828 presidential election. At the time of this letter, Rush was serving as Comptroller of the Treasury. In subsequent years, Rush proved to be an invaluable member of several administrations: Attorney General, Secretary of State, Ambassador to Great Britain and France, and Secretary of the Treasury. In fine condition, with two light circles of toning from wax seal not affecting Adams’ crisp signature. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
