American actress (1894–1929) who made a successful transition from the stage to films at the dawn of the “talkie” era. Following her death at the age of 36 from unknown causes (now believed to have been alcohol or heroin), Eagels was posthumously nominated for an Academy Award for her leading role in The Letter. Scarce vintage oversize matte-finish 9.5 x 13 photo of the actress with her hands clasped to her bosom, signed and inscribed in fountain pen, “To Lucile Pelouze, Most Sincerely, Jeanne Eagels, 1921.” In very good condition, with trimming to edges (just touching first letter of signature) and allover uneven silvering.
