ALS signed “M. Van Buren,” one page, 7.5 x 9.75, July 8, 1831. Van Buren writes to Levi Woodbury. In part: “I have not the pleasure of a personal acquaintance with Mr. Quane but from the character of Mr. Mc Farland have no doubt of his respectability & will be happy to hear that it is in your power consistently with the claims of others to quality him.” At the time of writing, Woodbury (1789–1751) had recently assumed office as Secretary of the Navy in the Jackson administration. He would later serve as Secretary of the Treasury, and, from 1854 until his death, as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. Faint intersecting mailing folds (vertical fold touching last name), scattered light wrinkling and soiling, and a few tiny tears and chips (one tape-repaired from reverse), otherwise fine, bright condition.
