Description

Presidential R&R: “To-morrow we break up here with many pleasant recollections of Long Branch”

ALS as president, signed vertically on the last page “With great respect, your obt. svt., U. S. Grant”,” three lightly lined pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.75 x 7.5, September 11, 1871. Grant writes from Long Branch, New Jersey to Mrs. Hoey. In full: “I return by the bearer the card which Mr. Hoey, your kind husband, was kind enough to send me at the beginning of the season, and thank you and him for your many favors. To-morrow we break up here with many pleasant recollections of Long Branch and the agreeable acquaintances formed. We shall hope however to meet them all, in good health, at their old places, next season. Please present Mrs. Grant’s and my best regards to Mr. Hoey & your daughter when you write them next, and say that we shall expect to meet them, and you, in Washington next winter.” Matted and framed (so that both sides are visible) with an image to an overall size of 19 x 14. In very good condition, with light vertical fold through signature, light toning to first page, a hint of handling wear, subtle soiling, and scattered foxing (mainly to first page; one faint, tiny spot just touching “G”), otherwise fine condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
