In part: “Your florist in Maddox St. (who once asked you whether he might send me flowers), has asked me for an introduction to Lord Herbert. He is a Frenchman, I believe, or of French origin—a great linguist & wishes to be an interpreter. I know nothing of him except that he is a most benevolent man (to other invalids beside me/and to ‘donneur’ that one is afraid of admiring anything he has. He has been no loser by me however—as I always get my flowers of him for all my invalids…. I told him that this was all the introduction I could give him. But please just mention his name to Lord Herbert … in order, as he says himself, that he may not be considered an ‘adventurer.’ He is just the contrary.” Accompanied by an early handwritten translation into French.
