Distinguished statesman and three-time presidential candidate (1777–1852) who became known as the Great Compromiser for his support of the Union prior to the Civil War. Outstanding ALS signed “H. Clay,” one page, 7.25 x 9.25, April 12, 1849. Clay writes to John J. R. DePuy. In part: “I received … your letter transmitting an interesting document, signed by a number of the members of the legislature of N. York … in which they did me the honor to express a preference for me as President of the United States. I thank you for it, and for the sentiments of friendship & attachment towards me, with which you have accompanied its transmission. I sincerely hope that in migrating to California you may realize all your fondest anticipations. It offers great attractions to the young and enterprizing. If I were not so old, I should be tempted to go there myself….” Clay had made his fifth and final run for the presidency in the previous year, losing the Whig nomination to Zachary Taylor. Intersecting mailing folds (short edge separations, one with early tape repair to reverse) and mounting remnant along left margin, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
