Signer of the Declaration of Independence from New York (1726–1798). ADS, signed twice “Lewis Morris,” one page, 7.5 x 6, May 12, 1797. A handwritten bill presented to the State of New York, totaling $64.00, for Morris’ expenses “as one of the Electors,” including “travelling allowance from New York to the City of Hudson & back again two hundred & sixty miles at four dollars per every twenty miles” and “my time at Hudson three days … at four dollars per day….” Matted and framed with a portrait and engraved plaque to an overall size of 17 x 12. Horizontal fold just touching first letter of concluding signature, small hole touching one word, and a hint of mild soiling, otherwise fine condition. In his 1995 reference History Comes to Life, Kenneth Rendell places Morris’ autograph material into the “rare” category among the Signers. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
