Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Pennsylvania (1719–1806). ADS, signed “Ja. Smith,” one page, 7 x 11.5, April 1784. A legal document wherein Smith, acting as defense attorney, responds to a suit filed against his client, Michael Heinecke, for unpaid claims totaling £52 “lawfull money of Pennsylvania.” Smith has also added the traditional legal “placeholder” names “John Doe” and “Richard Roe.” Matted and framed with a portrait and engraved plaque to an overall size of 19.25 x 18.75. In fine condition, with light folds (one vertical fold touching first name of signature), a few tiny chips and tears, and tiny hole touching one word of text.
