Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Massachusetts (1744–1814) who later served as vice president under James Madison. His name entered the language as a result of his support of politically advantageous redistricting, which became known as “gerrymandering.” Partially printed DS, signed “E. Gerry,” one page, 8.75 x 13.5, July 6, 1810. An appointment for Ebenezer Brooks of Harwich as Justice of the Peace for Barnstable County, Massachusetts. The embossed paper seal remains intact at upper left. Matted and framed with a portrait and engraved plaque to an overall size of 21 x 20.5. Light intersecting folds and a few faint stains, no faults affecting the signature, otherwise fine, bright, attractive condition.
