Highly esteemed British admiral (1758–1805) best known for his participation in the Napoleonic Wars, during which, in the Battle of Trafalgar, he lost his life. Hand-addressed and signed address panel, measuring 5 x 3.25, on a 9.25 x 7.25 off-white sheet. Nelson has addressed the panel to “Hercules Ross Esqr. Rossie Castle, No. Britain,” and dated along the top, “Dear September twelfth 1801.” Signed in the lower left corner of the panel, “Nelson & Bronte.” Nelson’s red wax seal, depicting a sailor properly dressed, holding in his hand the Broad Pendant on a staff, and trampling on a Spanish flag; other side bears the British Lion tearing the Spanish flag, the remnants hanging down, with his family motto “Faith and Works” along the bottom bears overall cracks, but remains mostly intact. Horatio Ross was born at Rossie Castle on September 5, 1801, son of Hercules Ross and Henrietta Ross [nee Parish].  He was named after Lord Horatio Nelson. Nelson was one of Horatio Ross’ godfathers. Hercules Ross and Lord Nelson corresponded over the period 1780-1802. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from PASS-CO. Scattered mild toning and soiling to panel, and paper loss to top of sheet from wax seal, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
