Description

American soldier and statesman (1739–1812) who served as Governor of New York and vice president in the Jefferson and Madison administrations. DS, signed “Geo. C. Clinton,” one page, 15.5 x 10, March 10, 1803. Governor Clinton appoints John Handy, Esquire, to the position of “Lieutenant Colonel, Commandant of the Regiment of Military, in the county of Tioga.” Signed at the bottom in ink by Clinton and countersigned by his Deputy Secretary. Mounted and framed to an overall size of 20 x 14.5. Several small areas of paper loss to edges and left side, previous storage folds, mild toning, some small fold separations, and a pencil notation under signature, otherwise very good condition.
