Description

Grandfather of science fiction

French writer (1828–1905) whose classic novels, including Voyage to the Center of the Earth and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, helped lay the foundations for the science fiction genre. ALS in French, one page, 5.25 x 8, no date. Verne writes to “Giles.” In part (translated): “If I did not reply to you a first time nor a second time it is because I was not in Paris.... I am arriving just this evening to bring back my son, who has whooping cough. I regret that I could not join you in accepting Mr. d'Osmont's invitation, so please convey to him my profound regrets, refraining if possible from making a joke of it. What would he think of me to miss his lunch twice, and what a devil of a friend would you seem to have.... In closing, dear Giles, I am part of the majority of your very humble and very obedient subjects....” Accompanied by an unsigned vintage postcard photo. In fine condition, with a touch of mild soiling, scattered wrinkling, and a few short tears to blank margin affecting nothing. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
