Description

Early Adams legal document cosigned by his brother as deputy sheriff

Partially printed DS, one page both sides, 8.25 x 6.75, January 25, 1768. A legal writ in the case of Spear vs. Spear, in which John Spear of Braintree makes a claim of three hundred pounds against Benoni Spear. The particulars of the complaint have been filled out in Adams’ hand; after penning the last four lines on the reverse, he signs “J. Adams.” Along the right edge of the reverse is a handwritten notation, describing actions and expenses involved in the case, signed by Adams’ younger brother, Peter Boylston Adams (1738–1823), as deputy sheriff. In good condition, with two near-complete vertical separations (touching several words of Adams’ writing, but not signature) archivally reinforced from the reverse, scattered toning and staining, and a few chips and tiny holes. The signature itself is clean, clear, and mostly unaffected. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
