HANDLE WITH CARE: The TRAVELING WILBURYS sign a profit agreement for “Last Night”

DS, fourteen pages, 8.5 x 11, January 1, 1989. A contract between Gone Gator Music and the members of the Traveling Wilburys regarding the song “Last Night.” The agreement specifies that the profits are to be divided as follows: Bob Dylan 14.17%, George Harrison 21.24%, Jeff Lynne 21.24%, Roy Orbison 14.18% and Tom Petty 29.17%. The document has been signed on the final page by Dylan, Petty, Harrison, Lynne and Barbara Orbison (as executor for the Roy Orbison estate). A two-page rider is attached at the end. The Wilburys began as an informal group at Dylan's Santa Monica studio, where Orbison and Petty went to record an additional track as a B-side for Harrison’s single release “This is Love.” The result, “Handle With Care,” was clearly better than mere “filler,” and the musicians decided to collaborate on an album—written and recorded, with input from all of the members, in an amazing ten days (an accelerated schedule made necessary by Dylan’s tour commitment). Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1 was released in October 1988 and became a popular and critical hit. While Orbison’s death impacted the band’s sound, they continued without him and released a second album in October 1990. In fine condition, with staple and holes to one corner and light handling wear. Auction LOA Roger Epperson/REAL and R&R COA.
