Description

Selective service: Cantor declines a post as treasurer of a Russian relief effort during World War II

TLS, one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, April 23, 1942. Cantor writes to multiple-Tony-winning producer Gilbert Miller (1884–1970). In part: “I am very much interested in the dinner being given … for the Russian War Relief, but I do not feel it would be wise for me to act as Treasurer. The reason? At present I am acting in capacity of Secretary and Treasurer for several other affairs, and as you know that the more times your name appears as official for an organization, the more ineffectual it becomes. I know you will understand….” The bottom margin bears a blue-pencil annotation by Miller, initialed “G. M.” A few pencil markings and notation as noted, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
