Description

GENERAL ADMISSION? Penny-pincher LONGSTREET hopes to attend Bull Run reunion with Johnston, Beauregard, and Sherman—if he can afford it: “I shall need a ticket going and coming, as I may not be in condition to attend otherwise”

Confederate general (1821–1904) who distinguished himself at Bull Run, Fredericksburg, and Chickamauga. ALS, one lightly lined page both sides, 5.5 x 8.5, June 18, 1888. Longstreet writes to T. Tourgee, expressing his interest in attending the Bull Run reunion. In part: “It will give me pleasure to join in the Bull Run Reunion next year…. General J. E. Johnston should be president of the occasion. The Governor of Virginia should make the address of welcome and General Sherman should respond. General Beauregard will go I suppose and should be invited to speak and some other prominent officer from the other side who was there. There will be enough in the way of speakers and ceremonies at least it so seems to me. I shall need a ticket going and coming, as I may not be in condition to attend otherwise.” In very good to fine condition, somewhat fragile, with some clean splitting along intersecting mailing folds, a couple small pencil marks, and a shade of mild toning, heavier along folds. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
