Description

A dandy of a Handy

Pioneering African-American musician (1873–1958), known as the “Father of the Blues,” who wrote such hits as “Memphis Blues” and “St. Louis Blues.” TLS, three pages, 8.5 x 11, Handy Brothers Music Co., Inc. letterhead, September 19, 1953. Letter to a friend. In part, “In spite of this activity ‘I don’t feel no ways tired,’ and it’s my hope that these lines will find you enjoying life’s blessings to the fullest. At this writing New York is a-flutter with its political campaigns in which one of our racial group will more than likely be elected to an important office for the first time, and yet, I fall back on an oft repeated quotation, ‘I care not who makes the Nation’s laws if I can write the Nation’s songs.’ It is not my writing the Nation’s songs to which I aspire but letting the Nation know about the songs we publish…We publish much Sacred music written by more than 50 Race composers and about as many of the other racial group and this letter is my request to be permitted to send you sample copies that your Minister of Music could look over for inclusion in your Churches.” Signed at the bottom of the second page by Handy. In fine condition, with a bit of mild toning. R&R COA.
