DS as president, one page, 14 x 17, July 23, 1812. President Madison appoints David Townsend to the position of “First Lieutenant in the 9th Regiment of Infantry.” Signed at the conclusion in black ink by Madison and countersigned by Secretary of War William Eustis. Accompanied by July 4, 1812 War Department document, informing Townsend of his appointment and informing him, “You will report to Colonel J. Larned, Boston” and also accompanied by an ALS from Townsend, dated August 4, 1812, reading in part, “I yesterday signified my acceptance of an appointment, received from the Secretary of War department, of First Lieutenant of Infantry.” All three are nicely cloth matted and framed with two portraits of Madison and a small name plaque, to an overall size of 40.5 x 27.5. In very good condition, with previous storage folds mildly affecting signature, mild toning and soiling and light mirroring of ink from premature folding. The white paper seal is intact. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA. Oversized.
