Description

Hepburn recommends a biographer to Anne Lindbergh

Unsigned TLS with lengthy handwritten postscript, one page, 8 x 12.5, no date. Very interesting unsigned Hepburn letter with typed transcription above from Anne Lindbergh, wife of Charles Lindbergh, that introduces Lindbergh to author Scott Berg. Berg authored Kate Remembered and other biographies. The letter has corrections made by Hepburn to it. In full, the typed portion of the letter reads, “Dear Anne Lindberg [sic] I want to tell you what I know about Scott Berg who is anxious to do a book on you two. He has been a friend of mine for a long time. He is a gent and a really careful worker. One (and you certainly) is in a terrible position because God knows someone is certainly going to do a book on you the minute you disappear - what should one do --? He has taste and discretion - so superior to most. Hepburn adds a lengthy and difficult to decipher postscript, “We seem some how to always pass in the night…I just want to say that I know Scott Berg.” In very good condition, with several repaired tears on reverse, Hepburn’s elderly writing difficult to decipher and light overall wrinkling and creasing. Anne must have taken Katharine’s suggestion and contacted Berg. According to an editorial review on Amazon.com Anne gave Berg “unrestricted access to her husband's and her own voluminous personal papers.” The book, Lindbergh was published in 1998 and contained the most startling revelation of Anne's affair in the late 1950s with a New Jersey doctor.
