French engineer and aviator (1872–1936) who made the first crossing of a large body of water in a heavier-than-air craft when he flew across the English Channel in 1909. Vintage postcard featuring a color image of a seaside scene at Biarritz, boldly signed in fountain pen, “L. Blériot.” The card has also been signed “A. C. Read, U.S. Navy”; Read, a lieutenant commander, piloted the early “flying boat” NC-4 during World War I. A subtle touch of rubbing, and light brushing to Read’s signature, otherwise fine, crisp condition. R&R COA.
