Voluminous archive of hundreds and hundreds of pages of documents, receipts, carbons, notes and other materials pertaining to both the Wise Sanitarium and Carter’s Warehouse from between the 1950s to the early 1960s. Archive contains over a dozen items signed by Jimmy Carter, as well as items signed by his wife Rosalynn and his brother Billy Carter. There are also many pages of notes and receipts, written in Carter’s hand, but not signed. Highlights of the archive include: hundreds of documents filled out and/or signed by Jimmy Carter, including: an SBA loan application; various Carter Warehouse invoices; a hand-drawn map and diagram of a property tract owned by Carter in Plains, Georgia; equipment and supply order forms; Wise Sanitarium stockholder documents; bank deposit slips to the Plains Bank; pages of handwritten notes, lists and calculations; an original photo of the Sumter County Electrical Corporation, showing a then-31 year old Carter in the far left; the original hard-bound stock issuance book of Wise Sanitarium, still half filled with unused stock certificates bearing receipts of stock issuance from all of Carter’s early relatives, two ledgers of meeting minutes of the medical staff of the sanitarium, ranging in date from 1924 up to 1940; six spiral-bound checkbook ledgers containing stubs from the Plains Mercantile Company; as well as hundreds of carbons, Carter Warehouse receipts, financial forms and other related materials. This archive was found in the attic of the old Carter Peanut Warehouse in Plains. The Carters moved their operation from the old warehouse in the early 1960s, and these remained in an attic for twenty-five years. Carter’s sister Gloria owned the building and sold it in the late 1980s. Consignor notes that this archive was found by workmen after the sale. In very good condition, with expected toning and age wear, some mild moisture issues and usual document wear. An extraordinary assortment of papers pertaining to our thirty-ninth president, and worthy of much further research. R&R COA.
