In part: “I have accepted the chairmanship of the Arts and Amusements Division on behalf of Sydenham Hospital, and in this connection I should like you to give me a hand in planning a program in support of that institution…. The work of this hospital is known throughout the country. Its interracial policy has set a national example, and its record of service in its home community is an enviable one….” On the same day, the Tony Award–winning Rodgers and Hammerstein hit Happy Birthday closed on Broadway after 563 performances.
