A courier offers his services: “The Department has not now any dispatches prepared for China, but they will be sent to you.”

LS, one page, 7.25 x 10, December 26, 1846. Letter to a gentleman who offered his services as a courier. In full, “I have received your letter of the 23rd inst. offering to take charge of dispatches for our Segation in China, for which please accept my thanks. The Department has not now any dispatches prepared for China, but they will be sent to you, in conformity with the directions given in your letter, together with a Courier Passport, in time to reach you before you leave London.” In very good condition, with intersecting mailing folds, several tape repairs to reverse and a small spot of toning to last name of signature.
