German field marshal (1891–1944) who earned the sobriquet “The Desert Fox” for his tactical genius as Commander of the Afrika Korps. In 1944 he was implicated in a plot to assassinate Hitler; given the choice of suicide or a trial, he ended his own life with poison. Pencil signature, “Rommel,” incorporated into the handwritten address on a 4.75 x 3.75 envelope sent to his wife and bearing a Hitler postage stamp and a postmark of March 15, 1942.
