Description

Remembering an aide who went down with the Titanic

TLS signed “Wm. H. Taft,” one page, 6 x 6.25, April 18, 1915. Taft writes to Sadie W. Stull in Charlestown. In full: “I have your card of April 14th, and thank you for your kind thoughtfulness in sending to me Massachusetts’ Floral Symbol, which you took the trouble to paint in memory of Major Butt.” Major Archibald W. Butt (1865–1912), a former journalist, Spanish-American War veteran, and military aide to Presidents Roosevelt and Taft, perished in the Titanic disaster. Accompanied by a recent printing of a photo showing Taft with Butt and two others. In fine condition, with a hint of subtle toning to perimeter from glue on reverse, well away from text and signature. LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
