ALS signed “John G. Whittier,” three faintly lined pages on two adjoining sheets, 4 x 6.5, March 5, 1869. Whittier writes to the well-known lawyer and poet Richard Henry Dana, Sr. (1787–1879). In part: “I am greatly obliged to thee for the pamphlet & paper herewith returned. I have nowhere seen so eloquent a tribute to Everett. It seems to me in the main very just in the characterization—the generous and magnanimous tribute of one who often widely differed with him on questions of public interest. Both the speeches are models of fine English and, in the sense of style may compare with the best orations of Everett himself. It gives me real pleasure to find myself [illegible] to one whose character as a man & genius as a writer early commanded my admiration. Thy prose and poetical works have long been familiar to me. I regard the ‘Buccaneer’ as the most vigorous & graphic poem ever written on this side of the water.” A touch of mild handling wear, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
