LS in Italian, signed “G. Garibaldi,” one page, 5.5 x 8, April 11, 1861. Untranslated letter is accompanied by an ALS, in English, by Garibaldi’s secretary which reads, in part, “I beg to enclose a few lines…signed by him, for which you will kindly accept as an apology his illness and the present embarrassed state of affairs in Italy. Garabaldi’s secretary refers to the General's invasion of Sicily and Naples, which was ongoing at the time the letter was sent. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope and a small contemporaneous folded packet containing a myrtle leaf gathered at Caprera, the island Garibaldi retired to in 1861. In very good condition, with light rippling to paper from adhesive, even overall toning to both letters and a small area of paper loss to bottom of Garibaldi’s letter.
