Description

Months before his controversial election as pope

Italian-born pope (1881–1963), born Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, who ascended the papal throne in 1958 and served until his death. As the guiding force behind the historic Second Vatican Council, John ushered in the most sweeping reforms the Catholic church had undergone in centuries. ALS signed “+ Ang. Giu. Card. Roncalli,” one page both sides, 8.5 x 12.5, Il Cardinale Patriarca letterhead, June 29, 1958. John, as cardinal, writes to his friend, the journalist Giacinto Gambirasio, mentioning that “in times of much prose, a little poetry is good,” that he is busy, and that he hopes to meet with Gambirasio at a future date. In fine condition, with intersecting folds and slight smudges to a few words. R&R COA.
