Description

Defeated, but in demand: “I only wish I could speak to every Progressive Club in the country”

TLS, one page, 6.75 x 7.5, The Outlook letterhead, December 24, 1912. On Christmas Eve, Roosevelt writes to Henry W. Wallace, the Progressive Party’s National Committeeman for Michigan. In full: “I wish I could accept, but it is a simple impossibility. I cannot at present make another engagement of any kind or sort, much though I should like to in your case. You see I have had over fifty requests to make speeches at meetings during the next two or three months. It is impossible for me to accept one without accepting literally scores of others. I am really very sorry. I only wish I could speak to every Progressive Club in the country.” Mild toning from previous framing, otherwise fine condition. LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
