Description

Bold Adams free frank to abolitionist and temperance supporter Gerrit Smith

Folded address leaf with a panel measuring 5.5 x 3.25, no date, addressed in Adams’s hand to “Gerrit Smith, Esqr., Peterborough, New York,” and franked in the upper right, “J. Q. Adams.” Ink notation on leaf, in another hand, reads “Two letters, written April 5, 1837 and July 31, 1839.” Smith was a politician who in 1828 became an active temperance campaigner, and in his home village, Peterborough, he built one of the first temperance hotels in the country. He became an abolitionist in 1835, after seeing an anti-slavery meeting at Utica broken up by a mob. Some light wrinkling along edges a red ink star under signature and a light shade of toning, otherwise fine condition. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
