Description

Not-so-modestly name-dropping: “Tennyson said that ‘A Pair of Blue Eyes’ was one of the best”

Author (1840–1928) of such classic novels as Far from the Madding Crowd and Tess of the d’Urbervilles and one of the towering figures of British literature. ALS, one page on a cream-colored 4.5 x 3.5 card, February 9, 1890. Hardy responds to a fan. In full: “I am much obliged for your good opinion of the Wessex novels. I have no clear notion of the order in which they should be placed. Tennyson said that ‘A Pair of Blue Eyes’ was one of the best. The impersonality you mention has arisen unconsciously.” In fine, crisp condition, with a very subtle shade of toning from previous framing. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
