Description

LS, two lightly lined pages, 7.75 x 9.75, State of Tennessee letterhead, September 14, 1864. Letter to Schuyler Colfax concerning an upcoming meeting with Johnson worried about his becoming a political liability. In part, “If I can attend the meeting at Logansport I will make an effort to be at other points in your District. I hope there is no danger of your defeat [as candidate for the House of Representatives from Indiana]. Anything I can do to save your election will be most cheerfully performed. The introduction of strangers from other states should be well considered as to the effect it will have upon the public mind. It would be exceedingly painful for me to visit your District for the purpose of aiding in your election and for it to be turned against us, and construed into an interference by strangers, which would operate against you.” In fine condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
