Description

“As he died to make men holy, let us die to make men free”: Howe pens a stanza from her immortal anthem

Author, suffragette, dramatist, poet, and biographer (1819–1910), best remembered as the lyricist of “Battle Hymn of the Republic.” AQS, the last stanza from “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” on a heavy embossed gray 5 x 5 card (evidently an unused photographer’s mount), signed “Julia Ward Howe” and dated December 1904. The text reads, in full: “In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea/With a glory in his bosom that transfigures you and me/As he died to make men holy, let us die to make men free/While God is marching on!” Matted with a book photo to an overall size of 14 x 9.75. A most attractive example! In fine condition. R&R COA.
