Description

Brotherly love: Einstein stands watch over his disabled sister, writing, “My sister’s ability to talk is severely handicapped and a visit would only make her painfully aware of her condition”

TLS in German, signed “A. Einstein,” one page, 8.5 x 11, embossed personal letterhead, May 11, 1951. Einstein writes to Dr. Dorothea Koenig at Vanderbilt University. In part (translated): “Naturally I am familiar with Maja’s long-standing acquaintance with Mrs. Glins-Frey. The reason why she has not received any mail from my sister is my sister’s serious illness (advanced arteriosclerosis of the brain) which for some time now has made reading and writing impossible. It is very kind of you to offer to visit. However, I would not recommend such a visit since my sister’s ability to talk is severely handicapped and a visit would only make her painfully aware of her condition. For these reasons, I do not even dare to mention your letter.” In fine condition, with intersecting mailing folds. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
