Franking signature as president, “J. Q. Adams,” on the integral address panel of a letter [from a different sender] dated November 13, 1825. The letter (one page of which is cross-written), from one “MCH” to Miss McKnight (niece of Stephen Decatur), provides a detailed glimpse of the Washington social scene and mentions the Clays, the Monroes, and the Marquis de Lafayette. Interestingly, Adams here clearly “abuses” his franking privilege, which, strictly speaking, did not extend to non-official personal correspondence from other parties. The franked panel is in very good condition, with a touch of soiling, clean tear to blank portion, small folding holes at corners, and a few faint stains; the letter has tape-repaired tears, separations, mounting remnants, and a few losses, not affecting franked panel.
