Free franked envelope, 4.75 x 2.5, addressed by Buchanan’s niece, Harriet Lane, to “Madame Beighmans, Charles Macalster, Esq., Philadelphia,” and franked in the upper right corner “Free, James Buchanan.” Envelope is stamped “Free” and bears a postmark from his home in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and dated January 10, 1863. In very good condition, with “Free” stamp directly underneath first letter of signature, some scattered light toning, pencil mark through a single letter of signature and address and some minor separation from back cover.
