Description

Suffering from an illness that clearly didn’t affect his verbosity, Lafayette summons the strength to write a detailed account of his malady

French soldier and politician who served on George Washington's staff in the American Revolution. In France he also took part in the 1789 and 1830 revolutions. ALS in French, signed “Lafayette,” one page, 6.25 x 7.75, New Year’s Day, no year. In full (translated): “I have to thank you for your latest kindnesses, Dear Madame. I would like to be able to bring my bulletin to you myself; but although I am recovering, I am still bed ridden. This minor illness has been working against my looking for a nurse either on my own or through the trusted domestic who had been treating me. They are rushing to town, the markets to find one. I am sending him to your home so he can agree with the people who were treating the young ones in order to take great care of the mother above all. It seems to me that for the lack of a nurse, they bottle feed small animals; it's what is done in our farms. I am sorry, Madame, to make you read the long details but they show you the worth I make of your kindness. Accept my grateful respectful affection.” In fine condition, with bisecting mailing folds, scattered light creasing, and light toning along several lines of text. Dark, bold writing and signature. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
