Description

“The government has not sent me a single peso for a month...the army is suffering from the most frightful poverty”

LS in Spanish, signed “A. de Sta. Anna,” one page both sides, 8 x 10.5, Private Secretary of the General-In-Chief of the Free Republican Army letterhead, January 16, 1847. A letter to General Cosme Furlong. Translated from Spanish. In part: “…The commissary of this army received the order of payment for 1,600 pesos that you sent in his favor with Juan Dominguez Celis from the commerce of Mexico City derived from donations made in that city. This amount has arrived very opportunely because the government has not sent me a single peso for a month which is the reason why the army is suffering form the most frightful poverty. I recommend to you that from now on all donations be sent directly to this commissary so that they may be used for their purpose; thus the donors’ will may be achieved. I have ordered that the commissary send you the corresponding certificate to meet his responsibility…please thank in the name of the army, those patriotic citizens. So that my usefulness may not be idle, command whatever you may wish from your old friend and very humble servant, QBSM [quien besa su mano - who kisses your hand].” Accompanied by a complete English translation. In fine condition, with vertical fold through a letter of the signature, scattered mild toning, and writing from opposing sides showing through. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
