As president, Buchanan had difficulties with the bad blood between North and South; his attempts to find a legalistic solution were never effective. By the election of 1860 Buchanan was tired of the presidency and did not seek re-election. "Old Buck" has been tagged as one of history's least effective presidents. He was succeeded by Republican Abraham Lincoln. Buchanan was a lifelong bachelor and the only president never to marry. His vice-president, John Cabell Breckinridge of Kentucky, was the youngest ever, just over 36 years old when he was inaugurated. Autograph DS, one page both sides, 8 x 12.25, March 1, 1852. In full: “Lancaster, 1 April 1852, Received of J.F. Heinish, Esquire, the sum of two thousand one hundred & twenty dollars in full of the principal and interest of the within bond. Also the sum of two hundred and forty dollars, the interest due this day on his two bonds to me, due respectively on the first of April 1853 and the first of April 1854.” This is written on the reverse of the mentioned bond, which is on rag laid paper. Accompanied by a color portrait of Buchanan. In fine condition, with usual toning, heavier along folds, a vertical fold grazing a letter of the signature, and writing on reverse showing through. The bond itself has had the signature removed (far from the Buchanan ADS) as was common when the debt was paid. Buchanan’s handwriting is clear, dark and easily read.
