ALS signed “Monty,” one page both sides, 5 x 8, personal letterhead, March 3, 1950. A terrific letter to “Alan,” evidently an author or historian, regarding an incident from earlier in Montgomery’s career. In full: “I return your draft. I have no comments, and I have added in the information you need. The First Sea Lord complained to the War office that I was not entitled to ‘splice the main brace’ and asking that I be told not to do it again. I was duly told!! I then wrote to the First Sea Lord (Andrew Cunningham) and apologised for breaking the rules. He wrote back a very nice letter. I have not offended in that respect again!! You can use this in your story if you like.” The phrase “splice the main brace” is traditional British naval lingo for “Let’s have a drink,” suggesting that Montgomery ordered an unauthorized “round” for his comrades. In fine condition, with several mailing folds, light toning and soiling, and a few scattered wrinkles and staple holes. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
