Two-term U.S. Representative (1852–1856) who later became a multimillionaire financier. He is credited with originating the system of “puts and calls” in the buying and selling of stock. LS, one page, 5 x 8, September 19, 1856. A letter to T. D. Platt. In full: “You will see by the notice sent out that the Republican County Convention is called for next Thursday the 25th—Now as our party is new and not very strong in this county and as the notice is very short I write to request that you will see that your town is fully & fairly represented in said convention to the end that there may be no fault finding when its deliberations are over—I should be pleased to see you hear on that occasion as a delegate.” In fine condition, with usual mailing folds and a few tiny marginal spots.
