President Johnson endorses a woman’s request to copy seized North Carolina documents for “literary purposes”

Endorsement signature as President, “Andrew Johnson,” on the reverse of an adjoining leaf of a letter from one Mary Bayard Clarke, 7.75 x 9.75, October 10, 1868. Johnson signs beneath a secretarial notation indicating that he is forwarding to the Secretary of War for his approval the woman’s request to copy “for literary purposes” the letter book of the Governor of North Carolina, which apparently was “removed” by General Schofield to Washington.
