American army engineer who designed and built the ironclad Monitor for the US government. Terrific lot of three ALSs, each signed “J. Ericsson,” dated between July 26, 1859 and October 4, 1864. Excerpts include: “I enclose Staughton’s answer [also included in this lot] to your letter. As our friend did not communicate by the usual course of mail, I take it the matter is urgent [here he has underlined the word urgent]. You will no doubt respond at once and oblige our mutual excellent…I hope you have by this time had the Captain often Wild P[?] at your office to see the…and say if he will give up the space wanted…he is quite willing to give.” Another excerpt reads: “By no means furnish Mr. Otis with sink the guide into the side of the hatches. The fact is I could apply my new check gear to any of the…to give me a chance of applying the friction pieces. If I have nothing but the [?] gear to…I think I will promise to attach that at once.” Accompanied by the letter referred to in the first excerpt.
