The Summer of ’76: Oliver Ellsworth signs a document just a month after the signing of the Declaration of Independence

Second Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and delegate to the Constitutional Congress (1777–84) who later submitted the amendments which became the Bill of Rights. As a member of the Committee of the Pay Table, Ellsworth was one of the five men who supervised Connecticut’s war expenditures. DS, signed “O. Ellsworth,” one page, 8.25 x 4.5, August 12, 1776. A draft ordering the payment to John Jeffery of “Three pounds toward his Services Writing for Pay Table Comtee. to amount accordingly & charge the State.” Countersigned by two other officials. In fine condition, with mild toning, light show-through from writing on reverse, and horizontal fold. R&R COA.
