Description

Hello, Dolley: Scarce franking signature of one of the most beloved First Ladies in history

First Lady who became legendary for her gracious manners and prowess as a hostess and who was acknowledged as a powerful asset to husband James Madison’s political career. In 1814, she famously saved many state papers and a portrait of George Washington as British soldiers advanced on the nation’s capital, barely escaping with the national treasures as the White House was occupied and looted. For the remainder of her life she retained a place of honor in Washington society and was granted a lifelong seat on the floor of the House of Representatives. Free franked envelope panel, 5 x 3, postmarked April 23 [no year], signed at the upper right corner, “Free, D. P. Madison.” Attractively triple matted and framed with a portrait to an overall size of 12.5 x 19.5. In fine condition, with light toning and irregularly trimmed edges, not affecting signature. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
