Fillmore writes regarding an American political prisoner in Cuba, “In regard to the imprisonment, trial and sentence of John S. Thrasher, in the island of Cuba, I transmit a report from the Secretary of State...”

LS, one page, 6.75 x 8, December 23, 1837. Letter from Congressman Fillmore to the House of Representatives concerning the imprisonment of John Thrasher. In part, “In regard to the imprisonment, trial and sentence of John S. Thrasher, in the island of Cuba, I transmit a report from the Secretary of State, and the documents which accompanied it.” Thrasher moved to Cuba and purchased Faro Industrial, then Cuba’s only liberal newspaper. In September 1851, he was condemned by court martial to ten years imprisonment and his paper was suppressed, after several months the United States minister at Madrid, was able to secure his release, probably with Fillmore’s help. In very good condition, with clipped corners, two small holes to top edge, light toning and foxing and a nice signature. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
