Description

Mamie writes shortly after her husband’s death, “I know he is happy resting there across from his boyhood home.”

Lot of two one page TLSs, each measuring 6.5 x 9, both to family friends, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Smith. The first letter, dated May 1, 1969, is from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and written on “Mamie Doud Eisenhower” stationery, and reads: “Thank you for the sympathy card and your sweet letter to me. I truly appreciate your thoughtfulness in remembering me at this time. Mike did stay with me four days and has now returned to her home in Florida. I, too, was glad that John could be by my side to help during the state funeral. I had often wondered how I could go through the ordeal but I knew it was coming and John was a tower of strength. Abilene was beautiful and the chapel was lovely. Everything was ready for him and I know he is happy resting there across from his boyhood home. I will be sailing for Brussels on the thirteenth and I think the change will do me good. The farm will still continue to be 'home.’” The second letter is dated November 19, 1968, written four months before Dwight Eisenhower's death, from Walter Reed Hospital. It reads: “Thank you for the lovely birthday card and your last letter. I was so busy with the campaign that my correspondence had to wait until after the election. It was well worth it, as the results made us all very happy. Mike came back from Florida in time to have a luncheon at the Army and Navy Club for my birthday. It was very nice and so good of her. The hospital had a little party for me in the evening which I also enjoyed. It turned out to be quite a busy and happy day. I attended Anne's wedding on Saturday and she looked so lovely. It is hard to realize that she is so grown up and a bride. We are now looking forward to Julie and David's wedding in December. I am so glad you are settled and happy in your old apartment. I will keep Bob’s card handy and call him when I have an opportunity. With the schedule here at the hospital, it is sometimes difficult to arrange for visits, but I will try.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelopes. In fine condition. R&R COA.
