Representative from Pennsylvania who led the impeachment proceedings against President Andrew Johnson. Handwritten DS, five sides of three pages, 8 x 13, 1831. Handwritten legal document regarding libel charges brought against Jacob Lefever, editor and publisher of the Gettysburg Complier and a leading Freemason. Stevens’ signature appears several other times in the text of the document. Lefever published an account of Stevens speech without revision, which contained a libelous comment. Lefever was sentenced to three months in jail and a $50 fine, but was promptly pardoned. In very good condition, with tape repairs to fold separations, scattered light toning and soiling, show through from text on reverse and a few small pinholes from ink erosion. R&R COA.
