Writing from the White House, President Harrison turns down an invitation: “I shall be so engaged in the necessary preparations for the meeting of Congress that even the brief absence from Washington which an acceptance of your kind invitation would require is not possible”

ALS as president signed “Benj. Harrison,” two pages, 4.75 x 8, Executive Mansion letterhead, October 22, 1890. Harrison refuses an invitation. In full: “It is a source of most regret that I am again compelled to decline an invitation to the Annual Banquet of the Chamber of Commerce of the State of New York. But at the time you have named I shall be so engaged in the necessary preparations for the meeting of Congress that even the brief absence from Washington which an acceptance of your kind invitation would require is not possible.” In fine condition, with light even toning, usual mailing folds, and a few narrow strips of adhesive residue, well away from any writing.
