DS signed by Madison as president, “James Madison,” and Monroe as Secretary of State, “Jas. Monroe,” one page, 15 x 17.5, December 18, 1814. President Madison appoints Jacob Brown to the position of Major General, signed at the conclusion in black ink by Madison and countersigned, “Jas. Monroe” as Secretary of State. In the War of 1812 he defeated a British attempt to take Sackets Harbor, N.Y., and the next year became commander of the Niagara frontier. Brown crossed the Niagara, took Fort Erie, and drove the British back toward York (now Toronto). He was wounded twice at the Battle of Lundy's Lane, one of the bloodiest of the war for both sides. His successes in the northwest made him a national hero. From 1821 to 1828 he was general-in-chief of the U.S. army. Brown County, Ohio is named for him. Brown’s sword and gold medal reside in the Smithsonian Institute. Framed to an overall size of 16.5 x 19. In very good condition, with last name of Madison’s signature very light but legible, missing seal, scattered toning and soiling and previous storage folds. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
